Lean and Digital Transformation: Designing a System That Solves the Right Problems
- Lean and digital transformation are often treated as separate initiatives. One focuses on operational discipline, while the other focuses on technology, data, and automation. In practice, neither is sufficient on its own.
- Lean provides the management system for identifying what creates value, making problems visible, solving them at root cause, and sustaining improved performance. Digital technology can strengthen that system by detecting abnormalities earlier, revealing patterns that are difficult to see manually, focusing limited resources on the problems that matter most, and reinforcing the controls needed to sustain gains.
- However, poorly applied technology can also weaken Lean management. Automating reports does not eliminate the need for leadership dialogue. Digital dashboards do not replace direct observation. Workflow tools do not create accountability, and automating an unstable or poorly understood process often makes waste faster, less visible, and harder to challenge.
- This session will explore how digital transformation leaders can use Lean daily management as the foundation for digital enablement. It will distinguish which elements of daily management should be automated, which should remain deliberately human, and how organizations can combine data, problem-solving discipline, and frontline ownership into one operating system.
- Participants will leave with a practical framework for using digital technologies not merely to monitor performance, but to direct attention, accelerate root-cause learning, and sustain meaningful operational improvement.
